Technical Information

 FRAME
FRAME: Typically made of wood or metal, the frame provides the architectural as well as decorative support for a work of art. Frames can be built in all shapes and sizes and come in a variety of styles and colors to enhance your artwork.
 GLAZING
GLAZING: A sheet of glass or acrylic that helps to protect the work of art from the surrounding environment. Glazing should never come in contact with the art. There are several types of glazing including regular glass, non - glare glass, UV (ultraviolet), conservation glass, and acrylic. Ultraviolet filtering glazing and conservation glass is a standard element of preservation framing. It helps to protect the art from light damage.

 MATTING
MATTING: A boarder of matboard placed over a print, photograph, etc. to serve not only as a design element but as a spacer between the art and the glazing. Matboard, commonly in 4-ply thickness, comes in a variety of colors and textures. Ranging from regular matboard to silks, suedes, rag and leather.

 MOUNTING

MOUNTING: Mounting is a process by which the artwork is attached to a board.

 DRY MOUNTING
DRY MOUNTING: The process of using dry adhesive tissues to mount paper artwork or photographs to a board using high heat and a drymount press.

 CONSERVATION MOUNTING
CONSERVATION MOUNTING: The process of attaching the artwork to the backing board in a way that will not harm the art.
Materials used include ragboard, rice or wheat paste, and mulberry hinges, or other inert (non-deteriorating or non- staining) materials and processes.
 STRETCHING
STRETCHING : Refers to straightening and shaping a piece of fabric or needle art. The material is dampened, stretched slightly to straighten, and tacked to a board. It must be allowed to dry while tacked before it is mounted.
 HINGING
HINGING: Materials used to mount artwork in conservation framing. Strips of Japanese or mulberry paper are torn; starch glue is applied to the strips. The paper art is attached to the acid- free mounting board only by these hinges. In recent years, a number of hinging products have been introduced, including strips of paste -impregnated mulberry paper that are water-activated.
